SPLITSORAMA
The Banana Splits were four zany actors dressed up as furry animals performing absolutely mental slapstick humor. They used to offer advice and answers to important questions of all time in their Dear Drooper section. They also run around and bump into each other all of the time and carry on like nothing had ever happened. I think that the Splits were the Wackiest foursome to hit TV since it was invented. Have you ever seen anything quite as mad as this before, I think not. Even thirty years later there is still a Massive fan club spread all over the world which only seems to get bigger each year. In the weekly show they had Recurring segments which included, the Splits Handshake, Drooper "Take Out the Trash", Dear Drooper, Mildred, Secret Password, Sour Grapes Messenger Girl, Fleegle News, Club Business, Hold the Bus, The Dilly Sisters and Uh Oh! Chongo. The show also included Groovy Music and Really Fab Cartoons which are still talked about today.
HANNA-BARBERA
The Banana Splits were the brainchild of Joseph Barbera. One half of Hanna-Barbera the childrens animation team who have produced great Cartoons and Characters, like the Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Top Cat, Penelope Pitstop, Scooby Doo and alot more. In 1967, Joe Barbera was approached by Lee Rich of the Leo Burnett Agency.
They were a Chicago Based Advertising Firm. His aim was to create a program designed as a showcase for Kellogg's the Breakfast Cereal Giant.
His idea was accepted and The Banana Splits show was born. Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky
became the four zany hosts for the Saturday morning childrens show
GOLD KEY COMICS
Gold key comics were very popular during the 1970's BUBBLEGUM ERA. if you look long enough and hard enough, you can still find these great comics in excellent condition today.
Gold Key Comics were an imprint of Western Publishing created for comic books distributed to newsstands. It was created in 1962, when Western switched to in-house publishing rather than packaging content for branding and distribution by its business partner, Dell
Comics.
Gold Key featured a number of licensed properties and several original titles (including a number of publications that spun-off from Dells' Four Color series). It maintained decent sales numbers throughout the 1960s, thanks to its offering many titles based upon popular TV series of the day, as well as numerous titles based upon both Walt Disney Studios and Warner Brothers animated properties. It was also the first company to publish comic books based upon Star Trek.
Over the years it did lose several properties, including the King Features Syndicate characters (Popeye, Flash Gordon, The Phantom, etc) in 1966, the Hanna Barbera characters (to Charlton Comics) in 1970, and Star Trek (to Marvel Comics) in 1979.
About the show
During the first season, The Banana Splits segments often concerned the group's confrontations with a rival club, the Sour Grapes Bunch. Drooper and Bingo offered advice to viewers in the "Dear Drooper" segment, while Fleegle served as the reporter for Banana Splits News.
In the second season, Fleegle attempted (quite unsuccessfully) to perform magic tricks as alter ego The Great Fleegali, while Super Drooper fought crime and Coach Bingo kept the rest of the group active in sports competitions. Other new elements included School Time, Nursery Rhymes and a Gag Wall segment (reminiscent of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In), as well as Fan Club meetings where the Banana Splits would read viewer mail. Goofy Gopher (voiced by Paul Winchell) would pop out from a flower pot to deliver the occasional one-liner, joining the Cuckoo Clock and Banana Vac as secondary characters. The characters' costume designs also received an overhaul (introduced in the next-to-last Season 1 episode, The Great Banana Splits Buggy Race), with Snorky now sporting a yellow and blue striped vest.
The Banana Splits In Hocus Pocus Park
Some of the live action segments (specifically those used during the musical segments) were shot at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington (during the first season) and, the following year, at Coney Island located in Cincinnati. In many episodes you would see The Banana Splits riding on the Runaway Mine Train roller-coasters, Log Flumes, Bumper Cars, Merry-Go-Rounds, and many other rides. Contrary to popular misconception, the amusement park scenes in the original series actually were not filmed at Kings Island; Kings Island did not open until 1972, while filming for The Banana Splits Adventure Hour wrapped in 1969. However, some of the rides seen in the series eventually were relocated to Kings Island (following a flood which led to the closing of Coney Island; the park later reopened on a smaller scale) and the live-action scenes in the 1972 production The Banana Splits In Hocus Pocus Park were indeed filmed at Kings Island.

Banana
Splits Costumes
I
get asked a lot if the costumes are available. Well
the answer is yes!
However,
they are made under license by a company called
Scollon
Productions, inc. as you can see from the picture of bingo to the
left they are an exact replica of the original costumes.
"Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay"
is a catchy music hall song written by Henry
Sayersand first performed in
1891. The song was best known sung by Lottie
Collins, and more recently
by the Mariachi-tuned Dilly Sisters on the 1960s children variety show
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour.
A 1945 British film of the same name
describes the history of music hall theatre.
The tune is widely recognizable and has been
used for numerous other songs; including children's camp songs and
military ballads from the early 20th century. It was also used for the
theme song to the show Howdy
Doody.
